Updated for 2026: Protected marine areas in Sanya are managed more carefully than before, so book reef activities through licensed operators and expect stricter conservation rules.
Founded in 1990, this coral reef reserve protects one of Sanya's most interesting marine landscapes. The water is often clear enough for visitors to get a good look at the reef and the sea life that depends on it.
The reserve covers roughly 4,000 hectares and supports around 100 coral species and some 600 marine species, from fish and mollusks to plankton and algae. It is an important research area, but it is also one of the best places in Sanya for a closer look at the underwater world.
Scuba diving is the main draw. Introductory outings focus on the reef's marine life, while some excursions also visit wreck sites, grottoes, and caves.
Beginners can join dives with experienced instructors, while certified divers may be able to arrange more advanced outings, including night dives.
If diving is not for you, you can still enjoy the reserve on underwater sightseeing trips or from glass-bottom boats. Some tours also offer sunset fishing, with the catch cooked on board.
