This reserve is one of the most interesting attractions on Hainan Island. It is set in a natural park not far from Yalong Bay, 30 kilometers from the island's southernmost city - Sanya.
The area of the reserve is 1,5 hectares. Tropical butterflies from three continents live here - Asia, Africa, and America, including rare species. A collection of other interesting exotic insects from around the world has also been assembled, with a total number of about 2 thousand.
An introduction to the world of dragonflies and beetles begins in the exhibition hall, where you can examine all those exhibits that are elusive in the “Butterfly Valley”. You will be told interesting facts about the local inhabitants, for example, that butterflies live only from two days to two weeks and do not grow at all after they emerge from the cocoon. Many species of butterflies always fly in pairs: the female and the male are inseparable.
The setting for the insects from the valley is provided by the park's rare plants. Here, for example, the “ageless pine” has taken root - a tree that lives up to six thousand years. It is also called the “dragon's blood tree” because resin flows from cuts in its bark.
This plant from the Dracaena genus traditionally grows in the Canary Islands. It looks very interesting: the structure of the trunk and crown has an umbrella shape, and the fibers of the tree's leaves are used in weaving.
