The Chinese Temple is located by Maenam Beach, 50 meters from the local pier, where sea transport arrives to Samui. Near the central part of the beach, there is a decorative Chinese village, where Chinese cafes, restaurants, and shops for tourists are open, as well as that very Chinese Temple.
The temple is not very large, but it is very bright and beautiful, richly decorated with carvings and dozens of figures of mythical dragons. The Chinese revere the dragon as the leader of all animals on Earth and a symbol of the Chinese nation. They even have a wish: "I wish your children become dragons," that is, grow up to be wise, strong, and capable people.
In mythology and religion, the dragon occupies the most honored place; on major holidays, the Chinese perform special ritual dances with dragons and lions, which are meant to drive away evil spirits and bring happiness and prosperity.
The Chinese Temple is known for its theatrical performances during the celebration of Chinese New Year. People come here from all over Thailand to watch the dragon dances and other traditional festive performances.
You do not have to wait for a holiday to visit Chinese Temple Maenam, because its decoration is very colorful and distinctive all year round. Ornate carved roofs, columns entwined with dragons, skillful painting on the walls and ceiling, and the aroma of Eastern incense create a special atmosphere.
