This is one of the favorite places of Russian fashion historian Alexander Vasiliev. And that is quite understandable: antique outfits and theatrical costumes from the 18th-20th centuries are exhibited here.
The gallery is located in the small “Meridiana” building of the Pitti Palace. The basis of its collection is historical costumes and accessories that were previously stored in the palace warehouses. The recent restoration of the burial garments of Grand Duke Cosimo I de' Medici, his wife Eleonora of Toledo, and their son Garcia has enriched the museum even further, providing rare examples of 16th-century attire.
The gallery halls are equipped with display cases with special sensors. They ensure that the optimal temperature for such rare items is maintained inside. The exhibition is updated every two months. This makes it possible to better trace the evolution of fashion. This is especially relevant for students who study it professionally.
Also worth noting is the collection of the famous designer and collector Umberto Tirelli, which consists of 90 stage costumes. He made outfits especially for theater, film, and television actors.
By the way, next to the gallery building there is a restoration workshop. It has a special laboratory where fabrics are restored. Largely thanks to it, people today have the opportunity to admire authentic antique costumes.
