This beautiful building with a green dome is designed in the Byzantine-Moorish style. It majestically rises above all the other buildings, standing out against the general background both day and night.
The construction of the synagogue began in 1874 and lasted 6 years. Its form was determined by architects such as Marco Treves, Vincenzo Micheli, and Mariano Falcini. The decoration of the house of prayer was undertaken by the Italian artist Giovanni Panti. He covered the walls and ceilings of the building with decorative patterns. Thanks to the large number of windows, there is always a lot of light inside the synagogue, and you can examine in detail all the beauty of its interior decoration.
As in all Jewish houses of prayer, a separate part of the building is provided for women. It is enclosed by a beautiful wrought-iron grille.
On the doors of the greatest shrine of the Jewish people - the Ark of the Covenant - you can see scratches from bayonets with which the fascists tried to open it during World War II. In addition, the occupiers wanted to blow up the synagogue, but fortunately, they did not succeed.
Today, one of the rooms of the house of prayer houses a museum dedicated to the history of the Jewish community. There you can see religious objects used for rituals, sacred garments, and jewelry.
