The Church of All Saints witnessed several dozen rulers, uprisings, and grand celebrations. Its decoration was undertaken by artists whose works are recognized as world masterpieces. It is quite worthy of being considered one of the main attractions of Florence.
Ognissanti Church began to be built in 1251. Originally, it was the family church of the Vespucci family. Yes, the very same one from which the famous traveler Amerigo Vespucci came. Everyone knows him as the man after whom America was named.
Unique frescoes by Domenico Ghirlandaio, Michelangelo's teacher, have been preserved in the Church of All Saints. Among them are "Saint Jerome," "Madonna of Mercy," and the legendary "Last Supper," painted by the master in 1480.
Here you can also see works by another famous painter - Sandro Botticelli. His "Saint Augustine" is considered a classic of Renaissance art. The fresco forms a pair, positioned opposite the image of Saint Jerome painted by Ghirlandaio.
In addition, the tomb of Sandro Botticelli is located in Ognissanti Church. It is situated next to the burial place of Simonetta Vespucci, just as the artist wished. They say this young woman was the loveliest lady in Florence. It is her features that can be seen in all of Botticelli's madonnas and ancient goddesses.
