The Butterfly and Insect Park has been operating in Phuket since 1990 and also serves as an entomological research center. All butterfly species in the park, of which there are more than 40, are bred by researchers on the park grounds.
Here you can see all stages in the life of these beautiful and delicate creatures - from chrysalis to a fragile beauty with astonishing patterns on its wings.
The park staff advise coming here early, ideally by opening time: then you will be able to see butterflies emerging from their cocoons and heading for the feeders. Feeders with pieces of fruit and fruit juices are placed everywhere, and if you stand calmly near them, the butterflies will land on your hands and even on your head.
There is a beautiful legend about butterflies - if you gently catch a butterfly in the palm of your hand and whisper your wish to it, and then set it free, the wish will surely come true. A butterfly makes no sounds, so it can convey your wish only to the Great Spirit, who will certainly grant it in gratitude for setting his beautiful and defenseless creature free.
The park where the butterflies live is an orchid garden with patches of real jungle, quiet paths, and a pond with colorful fish. So it is not only the park's inhabitants that impress with their beauty, but also the place where they live.
A visit to the local silk museum will also be interesting, where you will learn where this exquisite fabric comes from. The museum exhibition presents the process of raising silkworms, archaic tools and modern silk-production technologies, as well as the features of processing and dyeing.
