Mai Khao Beach is located in the northwestern part of Phuket. It is the longest local beach, stretching for a full 17 kilometers of coastline.
It is located quite far from civilization; tourists rarely come here, and local residents come even more rarely, as they do not like beaches at all and do not sunbathe. This makes Mai Khao an ideal place for those seeking romantic seclusion or wanting to enjoy untouched golden sands.
Besides its lack of crowds, the beach is interesting because it is located near the airport, and planes land and take off here extremely low, right overhead – all you have time to do is photograph them.
Mai Khao is also known for the fact that giant sea turtles come here to lay eggs, which is why setting up any umbrellas or sun loungers in the sand is prohibited here. The beach is part of Sirinat National Park, which is patronized by King Rama IX himself.
There are no traditional resort amenities on the beach in the form of sun loungers with umbrellas, cafes, or bars, and no entertainment except what you come up with yourself. People come here not to relax in a "civilized" way, but to feel the full wildness of the surrounding nature. The sea here is deep; just ten meters from the shore, you can no longer touch the bottom with your feet.
