The Church of San Gaetano is located in the very heart of the historic center of Florence and is definitely worth spending a couple of hours on - if only because it is the only church representing the dynamic and ornate Baroque style amid the geometric constancy of the Florentine Renaissance.
One of the richest churches in Florence was built for the Theatine order on the site of a Romanesque church dedicated to Archangel Michael. To this day, the church bears two names: that of the founder of the Theatine order, Saint Cajetan of Thiene, and Saint Michael - San Michele.
Construction continued from 1604 to 1648, and during that time many great artists and sculptors of the era managed to leave their mark on the appearance of the church, supported by equally great patrons. The order and the church were sponsored by the wealthiest families of Florence, including the illustrious Medici, whose name is immortalized on the facade.
