If you want to learn how the city of Nicosia changed and developed throughout its 5000-year history, then you should definitely visit the Leventio Museum. Especially since admission is free (although donations are welcome).
The museum bears the name "Leventio" in memory of its patron, Anastasia Leventis, whose foundation allocated the necessary funds to purchase a separate building in 1984. Five years later, the renovation there was completed, and in 1989 the museum opened its doors to its first visitors.
Among the museum's exhibits are items dating back to the prehistoric era, starting from 3900 BC. The Byzantine and medieval galleries (325-1489 AD) feature a unique collection of pottery from the 13th-16th centuries, as well as other household items preserved from the times of the Ottoman Empire and the British occupation. There is also a separate hall dedicated to modern history, which for Cyprus began with the declaration of independence in 1960.
In addition to the permanent exhibitions, the Leventio Museum often hosts temporary displays from other museums in Cyprus. In the small shop you can buy souvenirs as keepsakes for yourself and as gifts for friends.
