One of the oldest temples in Bali is located in the village of Tampaksiring, which is situated forty kilometers east of the island's capital, the city of Denpasar. The temple is more than a thousand years old; it was erected in 962 during the reign of the Warmadewa dynasty.
According to legend, to revive the warriors who fell in the great battle, the god Indra created with his staff a spring of life-giving water that resurrected all the fighters. The temple appeared on the site of this legendary healing spring.
Believers from all over the country, as well as tourists, flock here to pray, bring offerings, and perform a ritual ablution. To enter the temple, it is necessary to wear traditional festive clothing - a sarong.
Passing through the large gate, you will see statues of the principal deities and heroes of Hinduism - Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma, and Indra. Almost the entire main courtyard of the temple is occupied by a stone pool into which water flows from twelve fountains, which in turn draw water from the sacred spring. To receive purification, one must stand under each of the twelve streams of water.
On the left side of the temple stands a modern mansion, built in 1954 in honor of the visit of President Sukarno. It is now a place for hosting and accommodating important guests.
