Lak Muang is something like kilometer zero, only much more symbolic. It is a 3-meter pillar that is installed when any city is founded in Thailand; it is its center and the beginning of beginnings. But the column also has a more important function: to protect the population.
Lak Muang is the main shrine of all the cities in Thailand. In Bangkok, it is located across the road from the Grand Palace, and that is why it goes unnoticed by many tourists. Of course, undeservedly.
A chapel of guardian spirits has been built around the pillar. Bangkok has as many as five of them, and they are the true rulers of the capital. Thais turn to the spirits with all kinds of requests, but there is a belief that they are most willing to help couples who dream of having a baby.
Sometimes performances, dance evenings, and concerts are held here to delight the guardians. And on April 21, a large celebration is held in their honor, because it was on this day in 1782 that Lak Muang was installed. This happened by order of King Rama V, who decided to move the capital from Thonburi to Bangkok (old name - Krung Thep). The city pillar was installed in accordance with all the rules: on the tenth day of the waxing moon of the sixth lunar month of the Year of the Tiger.
