The museum of modern art is housed in a fairly old building, built in 1932. However, in 2007 it was restored, as a result of which the spirit of old architecture merged with the freedom and unpredictability of modernism.
The museum's reconstruction was entrusted to the renowned British architect David Chipperfield. In addition, he took on a number of buildings in the historic Rockbund quarter and on Shanghai's Bund waterfront dating from the 19th-20th centuries. As part of the urban reform called the "Rockbund Project," new buildings will appear on the site of outdated structures.
The art museum opened its doors in 2010. The building, which had previously housed the branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, received a new life. The simplified layout is centered around a single atrium, which makes arranging exhibitions easier.
It is worth noting that there is no permanent collection here; rather, it is an art space open to masterpieces of world fine art. Most often, of course, exhibitions by Chinese painters and sculptors are held here.
