On the shore of Töölönlahti Bay in Helsinki stands the Winter Garden, which amazes with its riot of colors, warmth, and coziness in the midst of the northern Finnish climate. A large collection of exotic plants is gathered here - more than 200 species; there is nothing else like these greenhouses anywhere in Finland.
This winter garden opened in October 1893. The construction was financed by Major General Jakob Julius Lindfors, and the graceful greenhouse building was designed by architect Karl Gustav Nyström, known for his projects that changed the face of Helsinki at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1903, Lindfors donated the greenhouse to the city on the condition that it be open free of charge to everyone who wished to visit. This rule remains in effect to this day!
Many plants form beautiful arrangements and flower beds. Here you can see rose bushes, tulips, daffodils, and even orchids, for which a separate area has been set aside. In addition to flowers and shrubs, there are also trees in the garden - palms, spruces, and camellias. Fountains with carp and cages with colorful parrots add even more variety to all of this.
There is nothing more pleasant than immersing yourself in this green and fragrant kingdom of plants, accessible at any time of year. Many meetings and dates take place here; city residents gather here to socialize and simply take a break from the gray routine.
