Construction of the stele "Minsk – Hero City," which became one of the main symbols of the Belarusian capital, began soon after the city was awarded this honorary title in 1974.
The stele is part of the monumental complex "Minsk – Hero City," located at the end of Pobediteley Avenue, one of the capital's main streets. It was officially opened in 1985, in honor of the 40th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War. The height of the stele is 45 meters, but they say that this obelisk is planned to be made even taller by extending the rays by 1.5 meters.
In addition to this monument, the complex includes the bronze sculpture "Motherland," a plaque with the text about Minsk being awarded the title of Hero City, and the Museum of the Great Patriotic War, which opened in a new building in 2014.
