Malaysia's main museum is located near Lake Gardens. You can begin the tour without even going inside yet, because even from the outside the museum building inspires admiration. It was built in the style of "rumah gadang" - this is the traditional way of building houses among the Minangkabau people. The three-story building is decorated on the facade with bright Italian mosaics. The museum opened on the anniversary of Malaysia's Independence Day celebrations, August 31, 1963.
Its collection occupies four large galleries, each of which represents a particular historical era. The largest number of exhibits dedicated to the ethnography and history of Malaysia is gathered here, from ancient times to modern history.
In the first gallery, you will see the results of archaeological excavations of the oldest settlements, household items, and other interesting artifacts. In the second gallery, you will be greeted by brilliance and luxury - this part of the exhibition is dedicated to the Malay kingdom; jewelry, clothing, and installations telling about the life of the Malaccan sultans are collected here. The third hall is Malaysia's colonial heritage, with weapons, ship models, and military uniforms mainly presented here. In the fourth hall, you will learn about the history of Malaysia gaining independence in the 20th century.
