1. Residenzplatz – the central square of the Old Town, named after two archbishop-prince residences that face it. At its centre stands the Residenzbrunnen, the most beautiful fountain in the city.

2. Salzburg Cathedral was the first Baroque church in the German-speaking world. It suffered severe damage during World War II but was meticulously restored. Beyond its lavish interior it houses an impressive collection of ecclesiastical art.

3. Hohensalzburg Fortress, one of the largest surviving medieval castles in Europe, rises majestically above the city. The summit of Festungsberg, with its sweeping views, can be reached by funicular.

4. Mozart's Residence is one of the most visited attractions in the city. The great composer lived here with his family from the age of 17 to 24, and many of his immortal works were written within these walls.

5. Mirabell Gardens – a magnificent palace-and-garden complex, one of the most beautiful spots in the city. The lush park, the Baroque museum in the former orangery, and Mirabell Palace itself are all well worth a visit.

6. St. Peter's Abbey, founded around 700 AD, gave rise to the entire city and still functions to this day. Mozart composed his celebrated Mass in B minor specifically for its cathedral.

7. Getreidegasse is a short but hugely popular street – whether for its abundance of little shops or for the house where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born.

8. Nonnberg Abbey, the oldest active convent in the Western world, was founded around 700 AD. It holds an extensive collection of medieval manuscripts, sculptures and paintings.

9. Hellbrunn Palace, built in the early 17th century in the early Baroque style, is surrounded by a picturesque park with ponds and fountains. The Monatsschloss hunting lodge houses an ethnographic museum. The Mechanical Theatre is especially worth seeing.

10. Kapuzinerberg rises 214 metres above the city. The summit, home to a viewpoint and a Capuchin abbey, can be reached by a winding path or a steep staircase running between houses.
