Attractions in Jerusalem
1. Church of the Holy Sepulchre. One of the greatest shrines in Christianity – a church built on the site where Jesus Christ was crucified, buried, and rose again.
2. Via Dolorosa, the Way of the Cross – the road along which Jesus Christ walked from the place where his sentence was read to his execution at Golgotha.
3. Western Wall – the holiest site in Judaism. A section of the massive stone wall surrounding the Temple Mount in Jerusalem's Old City, the only structure to survive the Roman destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE.
4. Dome of the Rock. Muslims regard this rock as the cornerstone of creation – the very place from which God began making the world.
5. Al-Aqsa Mosque. The third most important mosque in the world after Mecca and Medina, built on the site where the Prophet Muhammad met three prophets, offered prayer, and ascended to heaven.
6. Old City Walls and Gates. From the Lion's Gate to the Jaffa Gate and from the Jaffa Gate to the Dung Gate, you can walk along the top of the ramparts and soak up sweeping views and an ancient atmosphere.
7. Calatrava Bridge ("Harp of David") was a controversial addition among locals, yet undeniably striking. This cable-stayed bridge of original design was built in 2008 to carry the city's new tram line.
8. Tower of David. This ancient citadel now houses the Museum of the History of Jerusalem. From the observation deck you get a superb view over the Old City and the modern city beyond.
9. Solomon's Quarries. In ancient times, white limestone was quarried here for the construction of Jerusalem and the Temple.
10. Mahane Yehuda Market – a lively, colourful open-air market where you can buy just about anything and haggle to your heart's content.
