1. The Hungarian Parliament Building

The largest building in Hungary and, people say, the most beautiful. Budapest's Parliament looks like a medieval palace, and standing beside it makes you lose all sense of time. It feels as if a king in a purple mantle – or at least a Saxon princess – might step out at any moment. Inside, the building is even more beautiful than outside, so do not limit yourself to a quick glance at the facades and statues. Guided tours in Russian are held here twice a day.

2. St. Stephen's Basilica

The magnificent dome of this church can be seen from almost anywhere in Budapest. Like the Hungarian Parliament, it is the tallest building in the capital – both are 96 meters high. Remarkable architecture, a rich history, and immense religious importance have made this basilica one of the must-see stops on every Budapest tour. It also houses an old organ with a stunning sound, the largest bell in the country, and the greatest relic of the Hungarian people – the Holy Right Hand of St. Stephen.

3. Városliget Park

You should probably set aside a whole day of your Budapest trip for a walk through the city park. Believe us, it is worth it! Here you will find beautiful gardens with unique trees and ponds, the city zoo, the city circus, an amusement park, the Széchenyi bath complex, the Petőfi exhibition hall, the Műcsarnok gallery, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Transport Museum, the incredibly beautiful Vajdahunyad Castle, and the old Gundel restaurant, whose history goes back more than 150 years!

4. Vajdahunyad Castle

The real gem of Városliget Park is Vajdahunyad Castle, which was originally a wooden backdrop built for the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the Hungarians finding their homeland. Locals loved this historical pavilion so much that it was rebuilt in stone. It is hard to single out one style in the castle's architecture – it is pure eclecticism, though with decorative elements borrowed from the ancestral Vajdahunyad Castle, which is actually in Romania. Today the Budapest pavilion houses the Museum of Agriculture.

5. Heroes' Square

Next to Városliget Park lies Heroes' Square, with a column topped by the statue of the Archangel Gabriel rising at its center. Behind it stand two semicircular colonnades dedicated to the heroes of Hungary. On the sides are two neoclassical buildings: the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Contemporary Art (the Műcsarnok Gallery).

6. Buda Castle

A luxurious royal castle whose scale and splendor can be appreciated even from the opposite bank of the river. The first royal residence on this spot began to rise back in the 13th century. Today it is one of Budapest's most appealing sights. Within the fortress grounds you will find six museums, three churches, historic buildings, streets, and countless souvenir shops, cafés, and restaurants.

7. Fisherman's Bastion

Contrary to popular belief, this bastion never served as a defensive fortification. It was built purely for decorative purposes, as a beautiful backdrop for Matthias Church. Today, however, it is one of the most popular places among tourists, who love strolling along its long galleries. It also offers a stunning view over the Danube and Budapest.

8. Váci Street

This pedestrian street, a little over a kilometer long, connects two city squares: Vörösmarty and Fővám. It lies in Budapest's historic district and has preserved the atmosphere of an old European capital, which is exactly why tourists love it. You can easily spend half a day here wandering from one souvenir shop to another, admiring beautiful buildings and gazing at store windows.

9. Central Market

Váci Street will lead you to the Central Market, and most tourists cannot help blurting out wow when they see it. It truly is a beautiful building, built at the end of the 19th century. The Központi Vásárcsarnok opens from six in the morning every day except Sunday. The first floor is filled with market stalls, and the second has various cafés where you can have a tasty and inexpensive lunch.

10. Széchenyi Baths

This is a unique balneological complex supplied with water from wells more than 1,200 meters deep. It is rich in calcium, magnesium, sodium, fluoride, and boron, and although the water emerges at +76°C, in the baths it ranges from +18 to +40°C. Its mineral-rich composition helps treat many disorders of the musculoskeletal system, as well as digestive ailments when taken internally. But many people come here simply for cosmetic treatments, to swim in the pools, sunbathe, visit the gym, or enjoy a massage.
