The name of the Encants vells flea market can be translated from Catalan as “the charm of antiquity,” although this only partly applies to it. As in many similar markets, a significant portion of the goods has no particular charm and looks more like ordinary junk. On the other hand, if you make an effort, you can find real treasures here too — antique trinkets, cuts of beautiful fabric, or charming knick-knacks that you would not be ashamed to bring back from your trip as a souvenir.
The history of one of the oldest markets in Europe goes back more than 700 years. Today it covers about 15 thousand sq.m. and welcomes 100 thousand visitors a week. It can roughly be divided into three zones: food, furniture, and flea market. Wherever you are, do not hesitate to bargain and ask for a discount, especially if you are buying several items at once! Trade here is conducted simply: from portable stalls, boxes, or by laying goods out on the ground, without much concern for cleanliness and order; only a few rent covered counters.
In addition to items with a history such as silverware, vinyl records, and rare books, the so-called “stock” is sold here as well - discounted leftover inventory from large stores.
